Offered through the University of Calgary's School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape with support from the Alberta Real Estate Foundation, mddl U is Canada's first professional education program focused entirely on small-scale and missing middle housing development.

Registration is now open for Permitting, Consents, and Stakeholder Engagement, a six-week online, self-paced course on how middle housing projects move from application to occupancy. Participants follow the full approvals pathway, including rezoning, development permits, building permits, inspections, and appeals, and examine how federal, provincial, and municipal frameworks shape what gets built. The course also develops practical skills in stakeholder analysis and engagement, giving learners strategies to anticipate opposition, communicate project intent, and build lasting community support.

For planners, the course offers real-world delivery literacy from the applicant's side of the counter, and course hours can be applied toward RPP designation requirements. However, the program welcomes everyone, including real estate professionals, small builders and architects, and homeowners considering developing their lot. No prior development experience or prerequisites are needed.
