The City of North Vancouver Engineering, Parks and Environment Department requires a regular, full-time Planner 1 to lead the prioritization and implementation of the City’s streetscape and pedestrian improvement projects.

This position will be a part of the Project Management Office (PMO) and reports to the Manager, Public Realm Infrastructure; you will be responsible for a variety of policy, planning and public works construction projects.  This will involve developing a prioritization process, leading public consultation, and design development of pedestrian oriented public works.  You will contribute to the development of the capital plan, review development proposals, prepare reports and recommendations, and liaise with a variety of internal and external contacts.  You will also coordinate and attend public meetings and attend City Council and Advisory Committee Meetings (as required).  You will oversee consultant work and provide expertise to larger scale capital projects being delivered by the PMO.

You will have considerable knowledge of practices, principles and techniques applicable to pedestrian oriented public works planning and design, and the ability to understand and explain technical concepts and plans, and the ability to provide professional advice to other departments.  Your proven communication and interpersonal skills will allow you to build collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders and ensure success in the public consultation process.  You will also draw on your organizational skills to handle multiple projects, prioritize workloads and meet deadlines.

Your qualifications include a university degree in an appropriate discipline such as Community/Regional Planning, Landscape Architecture, or other related areas with professional design experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.  Professional membership or eligibility in the Canadian Institute of Planners or the Planning Institute of British Columbia is required.  Previous supervisory experience and a Project Management Certificate would be beneficial to the role.  A valid Class 5 Driver’s License is required.

Salary: $43.04 to $50.85 per hour (Pay Grade 28– January 2019 rates)

Hours of Work: The City of North Vancouver currently works on a compressed work schedule of 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday to Friday, with one scheduled day off (Monday or Friday) approximately each three-week scheduling cycle.
