UDI Designing for Light-Frame Buildings in High-Seismic Zones
Urban Development Institute
November 5th 2025
9:30 AM - 10:30 AM PST

This presentation reviews recent challenges in light-frame construction, covering seismic code changes and their impact on mid-rise residential building design and economics. Attendees will learn about risk mitigation strategies and practical solutions considering project location and varying soil conditions. Novel high-capacity systems will also be presented as an economically viable solution for very high-risk projects. Lastly, benefits and limitations for CLT-LWF hybrids will be reviewed from a seismic design standpoint.

Learning Objectives:

1. Understand recent code updates and how they'll impact light-frame construction.

2. Explore effective mitigation strategies to reduce these new risks

3. Recognize the cost impacts associated with various mitigation strategies

4. Consider the benefits and limitations of CLT-LWF hybrids for residential buildings
