SafeGrowth is an integrated method for planning safe neighbourhoods. It incorporates neighbourhood governance, sustainability and safety into planning and urban design practice.
In this course, you'll first learn 1st and 2nd generation CPTED (Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design). The SafeGrowth approach then expands to include:
- neighbourhood wellness and cultural activities to build cohesion
- overcoming obstacles to conflict resolution using emotional intelligence
- SafeGrowth® planning and community accords
- co-planning with community groups
- tipping point effects, such as land use impacts
- assessing risk and computerized mapping for crime patterns
- implementation strategies and safety networks
- safety audits, asset mapping, lighting and landscape analysis
- real-life project application and feedback
This three-part program is organized as follows:
- Part 1 (June 8-9) — Primer Workshop
- Part 2 (Teamwork) — Field Project. Teams apply what they've learned to problem areas in specific places. Expect to meet up at least once at the site with your team, as well as participating in follow-up discussions.
- Part 3 (July 6-7) — Advanced Workshop
You'll be led through the process by a team that includes urban planners, a criminologist and a former police officer.
Crime is complex. 1st Generation CPTED cuts crime opportunities by modifying the physical environment with planning and architecture. 2nd Generation CPTED adds neighbourhood-building strategies to sustain prevention efforts. SafeGrowth® digs even further at the roots of crime by transferring solutions like these to local groups so they can co-create plans with police and the city.
