MDL 101 is back and welcoming a new cohort! Offered through the University of Calgary's School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape with support from the Alberta Real Estate Foundation, mddl U is Canada's first professional education program focused entirely on small-scale and missing middle housing development.
Registration is now open for the final 2026 offering of MDL 101: Introduction to Middle Housing, beginning October 30, 2026. This six-week online, self-paced course kicks off the mddl U program. Participants explore what middle housing is, why it matters for Canadian communities, and how small-scale projects move from concept to construction. It's the ideal starting point for anyone new to the field.
This course is eligible for PIBC CPL units. Click here for more on PIBC CPL reporting.
For planners, the course offers a practical, ground-level understanding of how middle housing gets delivered, and course hours can be applied toward RPP designation requirements. PIBC members also receive a 10% discount on registration. To claim it, just mention PIBC when you email hello@mddl.co.
mddl U welcomes everyone, including real estate professionals, small builders and architects, and homeowners considering developing their lot. No prior development experience or prerequisites are needed.
