POSITION SUMMARYAn opportunity for a post-secondary student to take part in a temporary summer position within the Development Services department to improve your skills in land use planning. The main focus will be to assist the team in providing current and long-range planning information and assistance to developers, the business community, WFN members and the public.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES- Assists staff with a variety of assigned planning and development related duties such as planning application, development proposals, policy and law development, subdivision and other duties as required.
- Attends a variety of meetings with staff in order to gain a better understanding of the sub-departments within Development Services
- Assists with any projects that arise in order to gain further knowledge of how a local government operates
- Ability to perform research as required
- Performs all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the work plan and as required by the Senior Planner
- Performs all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the Westbank First Nation policies, standards and procedures
- Maintains strict confidentiality on all matters relating to the affairs of Westbank First Nation
QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND CERTIFICATION
- Minimum two years of post-secondary required; must be registered in a post-secondary institution and returning in the fall of 2019 to continue studies
- Must be registered in an accredited post-secondary institution in a discipline relevant to this position
- A student who is currently enrolled in a Master’s program would be preferred
EXPERIENCE
- Strong customer service skills
- Planning policy research and development
- Experience in writing and evaluating requests for proposal and expression on interest
- Familiar with the development of progressive community plans, policies and local government law.
- Experience with First Nation and Local Government planning and legislation
OTHER QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, AND SKILLS
- Have experience using MS Office Software
- Knowledge of GIS and Autocad
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment
- Ability to manage several tasks and deadlines concurrently
- Valid BC Driver’s license (class 5) and clean driving abstract
A competitive starting hourly rate, commensurate with appropriate experience is offered.
