McElhanney Consulting Services Ltd. seeks a Senior Planner to join our Land Development team in our Courtenay office. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with our multi-disciplinary team of Engineers, Surveyors, Biologists and their related professionals to provide innovative and integrated consulting services to our private and public clients.

 

We are looking for a holistic thinking, motivated and passionate person to contribute to our diverse rural and urban projects - someone who will bring a critical mind to exploring new approaches and a willingness to implement them in a team environment. 

 

Responsibilities

  • Project management of land development projects
  • Lead innovative public consultation processes
  • Community planning, policy analysis and land use studies
  • Business development with existing and new/potential clients
  • Supervise and provide direction to technical and professional staff, as needed.

 

Requirements

  • 10+ years’ experience in land development approval processes and community planning; excellent client relationships in the Vancouver Island market is an asset. Less experience will be considered for the ideal candidate.
  • Public Sector experience would be an asset. 
  • Preferred candidates will have a Master’s Degree in urban planning, or related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Eligibility for membership with the Canadian Institute of Planners
  • Proven excellence in problem solving and implementation; capability of providing strategic land use and development advice, managing municipal approval processes and coordinating multidisciplinary teams
  • Ability to manage complex land development and community planning projects, prepare development concepts, undertake comprehensive neighborhood planning assignments, liaise and negotiate with government agencies, conduct research, prepare reports, and execute public consultation programs
  • Comprehensive understanding of land development processes, applicable government regulations and planning theory
  • Strong communication, interpersonal and time management skills with the ability to function in a high volume, challenging environment
  • Ability to build and maintain strong business relationships
  • A valid driver’s license is required.
