The Director of Planning and Development plays a key leadership role at the District of Sechelt reporting to the Chief Administrative Officer.  As a member of the Senior Management Team along with the Chief Administrative Officer and other department directors, this position contributes directly to achieving the overall vision of the organization and the community.


The Planning and Development Team consists of our Municipal Planner, two Community Planners, Planning Technician, Technical Assistant, two Building Inspectors, two Bylaw Enforcement Officers and a GIS Technician. 


The successful candidate will possess proven leadership in a local government environment; superior communication skills; thorough knowledge of the principles, practices and methods required in the zoning and planning bylaws; extensive knowledge of community development, planning and building programs; working knowledge of relevant computer and GIS applications; and excellent organization skills. 


The successful candidate will create effective systems to manage the work flow of a high performing team in a unionized environment. The successful candidate will have the ability to work with elected officials; clearly present written and verbal information; manage conflict; perform multiple duties simultaneously within deadlines; develop effective working relationships with employees, developers, council and the general public; and serve as the statutory Approving Officer for the District.


The ideal candidate will have a University Degree in planning, urban planning, architecture, civil engineering, or a closely related field, preferably at the graduate level; membership with the Planning Institute of British Columbia; an established progressive career in Planning and Development Services or a related field, preferably in the municipal environment.
