Summarized Position Responsibilities: 

This is a senior-level planning role for an experienced urban planner who wants to have a meaningful impact on how communities grow and evolve. The position is responsible for leading and coordinating a diverse portfolio of planning initiatives that shape the long-term vision, policy framework, and physical form of the community.

The role plays a key leadership function in major planning projects such as Official Community Plan updates, neighbourhood and area plans, environmental programs, policy development, planning studies, and bylaw creation. In addition to forward-looking policy work, the position provides expert planning guidance on complex land use and development applications, including Comprehensive Development Plans as well as significant Official Community Plan and zoning amendments.

This is a highly collaborative role requiring strong project management and relationship-building skills. The planner works closely with external consultants, applicants, advisory committees, provincial ministries, internal departments, and community stakeholders to move projects forward from concept through implementation. Clear communication and professional judgment are essential, particularly when navigating competing interests and complex planning issues.

Our Ideal Candidate:

• Bachelor or Masters Degree in planning, or equivalent combination of education and experience in a related field
• A minimum of 5 years of experience in a related position
• Membership in the Planning Institute of British Columbia 
• Class 5 BC Driver’s License
• Extensive knowledge of local land use policies and regulations, environmental legislation, as well as provincial and federal legislation related to planning
• Experience with community and long-range planning, as well as techniques of analysis and synthesis of information
• The ability to exercise courtesy, tact and diplomacy in the exchange of information with employees and external contacts
