Reporting to the Environmental Sustainability Manager, you will be responsible for the research, development and implementation of programs, policies and initiatives in support of the City’s environmental sustainability plans and strategies.
To advance community and corporate climate action, the Sustainability Programs Specialist will effect a measurable reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, energy use, resource consumption and community waste; develop, track, analyze and report on sustainability measures and indicators; and coordinate and direct the delivery of sustainability projects.
You will build strong relationships to facilitate working with staff across the City to identify and implement opportunities that advance sustainability progress, and collaborate on the development and implementation of education and engagement campaigns. In addition, you will supervise staff and direct consultants, contractors and volunteers, as well as positively representing the Engineering department on programs and committees while supporting and advancing internal and external partnerships.
The ideal candidate will have completed a Bachelor’s Degree in environmental science, engineering or related discipline plus 3-5 years of related experience that includes:
- Demonstrated experience in project management, contract administration, business case development, and budgeting processes
- Sound knowledge of the principles, best practices, strategies, technologies, objectives and systems related to sustainability, climate action (both mitigation and adaptation), and energy efficiency, including their application in policy, regulation, and federal and provincial legislation in a local government setting
- Demonstrated ability to develop, monitor, track, analyze, report on and effectively present complex technical data to internal and external audiences
- Ability to supervise the work of subordinates, and direct and oversee the work of consultants, contractors and volunteers.
- Excellent verbal communications skills, interpersonal skills (including facilitation and collaboration), and presentation skills appropriate for a variety of audiences
An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered. A valid BC Driver’s license is required and applicants under consideration will be required to undergo a police security clearance evaluation.
The City offers a CUPE hourly rate of $38.73 to $45.73 (2020 rates) plus a comprehensive benefits package and an earned day off program are offered.
