The City of Port Alberni is currently looking for a SUSTAINABILITY AND CLIMATE ACTION ADVISOR to join a progressive and dynamic organization that provides a full range of programs and services to taxpayers. This position reports to the Director of Development Services and is responsible for leading and coordinating the City’s response to climate change and the City Climate Action Plan.  

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the implementation of the City’s Climate Action Plan (CAP), including greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction targets and climate adaptation strategies.
  • Integrate sustainability principles into municipal policies such as the Official Community Plan (OCP), zoning bylaws, and other regulatory frameworks.
  • Research, coordinate and report on best practices for climate action and recommend policy updates.
  • Facilitate public consultation and engagement to raise awareness about climate change and sustainability goals.
  • Work across municipal departments in applying climate action/adaptation considerations to projects and initiatives and to ensure alignment with sustainability objectives.
  • Conduct GHG inventories and disaster climate risk and vulnerability assessments to inform policy decisions.
  • Related duties as required.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Completion of a bachelor’s degree in environmental studies, sustainability, community or regional planning or related discipline.
  • A minimum of 4 years of experience in related work, including experience in climate action and/or adaptation, sustainability initiatives or environmental studies.
  • Experience in planning or a similar environmental role at the local government level.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Eligibility or membership in the Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP) and Planning Institute of BC (PIBC), and/or designation as a Climate Change Professional (CCP) would be considered assets.
  • Valid BC Class 5 driver’s license.

This is an exempt position, with a salary range of $91,879 - $105,433, a comprehensive benefit package and flex day work schedule. Qualified candidates may apply by forwarding a resume and cover letter by 4:30 pm on May 23, 2025:
