Senior Urban Designer

Job ID# 2020.002 / Regular Full-Time

$106,358 to $132,947 annually 

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Senior Urban Designer is responsible for providing a leadership role on Urban Design and Architectural matters to our diverse and knowledgeable planning team in addition to reviewing complex rezoning and development permit applications and special projects as may be assigned from time to time.  The successful candidate is a highly experienced and trained urban designer responsible for making key recommendations on matters relating to all aspects of urban design.  

Examples of key work activities included:

• Prepare and implement development permit guidelines and associated urban design policies/requirements.
• Manage complex rezoning and development permit applications including the preparation of the necessary staff reports and bylaws.
• Communicate urban design principles to other members of the planning team in an effective and timely manner to ensure a high quality and urban design standard is achieved throughout the City.
• Responsible for mentoring other professional planning staff on urban design matters as well as providing urban design input into rezoning and development permit applications under staff review.
• Work closely and effectively with other City departments to advance urban design initiatives throughout the organization.

Position Requirements

A Master's Degree in Planning or Architecture is required, with a Bachelor’s degree in a related field (e.g. Architecture, Landscape Architecture or Urban Design) supplemented by a minimum of 10 years experience with specific experience in urban design, development applications and policy planning, including the preparation of new bylaws and zoning bylaw amendments.  Experience in a municipal setting is preferred.

Membership or eligibility for membership in the Canadian Institute of Planners (MCIP) and Planning Institute of British Columbia (PIBC).  Accreditation in the Architectural Institute of British Columbia (AIBC) or B.C. Society of Landscape Architects (BSSLA) will also be considered.
