Department of Environment, Government of Yukon

This position is responsible for providing leadership, strategic analysis and advice to department senior management and other government departments on environmental values and interests for regional, sub-regional, resource, community land use planning, and zoning initiatives.  The Senior Advisor leads the department’s participation in government planning exercises by coordinating and interpreting information on environment values and developing options and recommended courses of action to senior management, including preparing approval documents.

The successful applicant will have strong problem-solving skills, the ability to lead and coordinate corporate projects, and effectively communicate to enable executive decision making. We are looking for someone to build and maintain strong working relationships with partners.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Degree in planning, political science or in a related field (e.g. environmental, resource, community planning);
  • Experience providing policy analysis and issues management advice, and preparing briefing materials for senior executives;
  • Experience in leading planning, policy, or consultation projects;
  • Experience in researching, analyzing and synthesizing information from a wide varieties of sources;
  • Experience working collaboratively with First Nations, industry, and/or non-government organizations;
  • Membership in the Canadian Institute of Planners is an asset.


Candidates who have education, training, and experience equivalent to the essential qualifications listed above will be equally considered.


Knowledge, Skills and Suitability:

Candidates should have and may be assessed on:

  • Thinking strategically and taking a comprehensive, long-term view, critically assessing options and implications;
  • Influencing others by generating commitment, and building coalitions internally, and externally;
  • Taking action and achieving results with focus, commitment, and applying resources to achieve results;
  • Ability to present ideas and recommendations that involve complex and politically sensitive issues to management, decision-making bodies, committees, and community partners;
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to facilitate groups, and apply principles of interest based negotiation;
  • Familiarity with northern resource sectors, economy, and modern land claim agreements.

Job Requirements:

  • Occasional travel within and outside of the territory
