Job Summary
Campus + Community Planning is a committed group of urban planners, designers, engineers, public consultation professionals, building inspectors and sustainability experts dedicated to creating a vibrant, sustainable, live-work-learn community at UBC.
The Planning + Design division of UBC Campus + Community Planning has an exciting opening for a Planning Analyst at the Vancouver campus. The Planning Analyst will be a 2.5 year position that will support a wide variety of projects and planning processes with a focus on urban planning and design research and analysis, graphic report and presentation layout and 3D visualization of design concepts, and preparation of presentations and reports. The Planning Analyst will work closely with project and departmental leads, and will be responsible for providing technical support for short, medium and long-term planning and urban design processes involving stakeholder consultation. The Planning Analyst will also have a variety of other planning assignments where required.
Organizational Status
This position reports to the Associate Director, Community Planning. The Planning Analyst will also work closely with Okanagan Campus Planning staff, other C+CP staff, UBC Properties Trust staff, various UBC departments, and other internal and external stakeholders. The Planning Analyst will also have contact with the campus community and general public through consultation activities.
Work Performed
- Perform technical research, data collection and urban planning & design analysis, graphic representation, including preparation of site plans, site analysis, graphics for presentations, and report writing.
- Conduct research on a range of topics including innovative best practices in planning and urban design policy, guidelines and standards.
- Translate findings from this research into written reports and presentations, and develop recommendations for various planning initiatives.
- Document scopes of work and coordinate preparation of deliverables.
- Analyze and graphically display data and research for department units (e.g. GIS, land use, urban design, transportation, built form).
- Support the development of high quality graphic and written information for public consultation and engagement processes for in-person and on-line platforms, and participate in public-facing events to communicate this information.
- Prepare maps, diagrams, charts, tables, graphics and other presentation materials using applicable computer programs and applications, (i.e., Adobe Creative Suite, Sketchup, StoryMaps, etc.).
- Provide day-to-day support for implementation of plans, policies, and guidelines.
- Respond to requests for information from the public, developers, staff, consultants and others.
- Other duties as required.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
The Planning Analyst is responsible for technical planning and design support related to the use and development of the UBC campus lands as well as for analysis and reporting on planning processes that are public facing. Incorrect information and inaccuracies could, if handled incorrectly, have a negative impact on the department's credibility and reputation with the campus community. Recommendations and decisions affect financial expenditures that contribute to the physical image of the University.
Supervision Received
Works with a high degree of independence under the direction of the Associate Director, Community Planning.
Supervision Given
May coordinate work of external service providers, support staff and students as required.
Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate or technical degree in a relevant discipline such as Urban Planning, Architecture or Landscape Architecture, with eligibility for membership in a professional Institute or Association. A Master’s degree in Urban Planning, Architecture, or Landscape Architecture preferred. Minimum of three years experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience required.
This position requires a strong degree of versatility, organizational and analytical skills with strong attention to detail. The candidate will have an ability to prioritize work effectively under tight deadlines. Excellent oral, written and interpersonal skills are required, as are strong graphic skills for visualizations, report layouts, display boards, PowerPoint presentations, etc.
The candidate will possess a friendly, collaborative, team-focused working style, be a proactive, positive and creative problem solver and solution seeker, and take initiative with a high level of personal responsibility. The candidate will understand the value of building relationships with a range of stakeholders and demonstrate excellent listening, diplomacy, empathy and conflict resolution skills when interacting with the campus community and stakeholders. The ability to prioritize and appropriately manage the performance of tasks, and work efficiently and effectively under pressure to meet deadlines is critical.
Required computer skills include standard office software as well as design applications, including In Design, Illustrator, Photoshop, GIS, AutoCAD, Sketch-up and / or other planning related software.
