We are the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh – descendants of the original Sḵwx̱wú7mesh-speaking villages throughout the watersheds of the Squamish River, Mamquam River, Howe Sound, English Bay, False Creek, and Burrard Inlet. With over 4,100 members, the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw is one of the largest First Nations in British Columbia, and the future is one of growth, ambition, and opportunity. With a variety of projects and initiatives underway – including the development of the Sen̓áw lands which will create 6000 housing units, in the heart of Kitsilano – the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw is poised to have a major influence throughout its ancestral lands from Vancouver and Squamish to Whistler.

The Executive Director, Community Services is responsible for a significant portfolio, overseeing hundreds of millions of dollars in development and projects, while maintaining the health, safety and reliability of existing infrastructure and community. The division’s four distinct areas encompass Planning & Capital Projects, Community Operations, Squamish Valley Operations, and Public Safety. As part of Squamish Nation’s leadership team, reporting to the Chief Administrative Officer and interacting regularly with Council, the Executive Director will work to identify opportunities for the departments to work more closely together, innovate, and ensure they are meeting Council’s vision and goals. The Executive Director will have the opportunity to influence the strategic direction of the organization, while always being guided by the values of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw. Working closely with a wide variety of external partners, the Executive Director must consistently connect with colleagues and members to ensure they are accurately representing the Nation’s vision, beliefs and ideals.

As the ideal candidate, you have been responsible and accountable for overseeing a large and diverse portfolio in planning, development, operations and facilities, ensuring a high level of customer service to a broad range of clients. You bring an understanding of managing a department in a way that balances broad strategic direction, multiple priorities, cost efficiencies, and meeting the unique needs of a variety of users. A true and demonstrated leader and relationship builder, you have a strong customer service ethic and an ability to infuse that across an organization. You bring experience working in a public sector environment – and ideally an Indigenous organization – where needs are extremely varied. A true collaborator, you operate with humility, bring creativity to problem solving, and have a proven ability to create a positive and enthusiastic work environment. You are known for your ability to develop trusting working relationships with elected officials, employees, external partners and community members, and you bring a commitment to learning Squamish Nation’s culture and values. In addition, your experience in large scale development, facilities operation, capital planning, and project management is augmented by a relevant degree.
