Details

As the Development and Heritage Planner you are joining our dynamic team of Planning and Development professionals who are committed to “Take Care of Banff” by ensuring the Town of Banff’s built environment reflects the beauty, heritage, and natural grandeur of Canada’s premier national park.

You have a passion for high quality development and vernacular architecture that is essential to our healthy and vibrant community. This includes an uncompromising work ethic, superb written and verbal communication skills along with a proven ability to define and meet individual and team oriented project goals.

You are familiar with land use, development and design review processes, policy analysis and interpretation, leading public participation and consultation processes and balancing public and private, individual and community interests. You will negotiate with residents, business owners and their consultants on acceptable redevelopment scenarios and built form solutions as part of the redevelopment process. You will manage a range of projects from the simplest of sign permits to major hotel redevelopments.  You will also provide support and professional expertise to other planning staff within the department, undertaking planning studies and/or review of development applications.

In addition to your development review role, you will lead the department’s heritage planning function which includes serving as a liaison to the Banff Heritage Corporation, leading the development of heritage policy, and supporting initiatives to protect built and natural heritage within the community. The development of a Heritage Master Plan for the community will be an exciting initial project for the successful candidate, with follow-up actions driving the heritage program for the next five years.

Having at least three to five years of experience in a professional urban planning and / or heritage role will be helpful in navigating our strict growth management regulations and the complex policy and land development issues unique to our town. You will apply inherent competencies to successfully multi-task and exercise sound judgment in decision making, facilitating effective public outreach meetings and project presentations to boards, commissions and elected officials.

Formally you have a post-secondary degree in urban planning or a related discipline such as heritage preservation, landscape architecture, architecture and urban studies. You are also eligible for membership in the Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP). We look forward to reviewing your background, skills and natural talents and to providing you with an opportunity to apply your diverse perspectives and skills in our mountain resort community setting.

“Taking care of Banff: our People, our Community, our Park.”
