The Opportunity
We have an exciting opportunity for a Community Planner to join our Planning and Development Services Team. This is a mid-level exempt position reporting to the Manager of Planning and Development Services. This professional role is ideal for a candidate who exercises initiative and professional judgement to contribute to planning activities that impact Merritt’s social, environmental, and economic health.
This role provides the opportunity for you to review and evaluate development applications, process Land Titles forms, meet with development applicants, and conduct research to support project proposals and policy recommendations. You will be able to apply your knowledge to interpret and explain relevant Acts and Regulations, respond to project inquiries, and work with the City’s GIS service provider to maintain mapping systems.
Working on complex issues, you will have the opportunity to consult with internal and external stakeholders including other city departments, governments and agencies, developers and property owners, and land use professionals. In this role you will have the opportunity to participate on teams and committees involving diverse interests and assist in developing practical action plans.
Qualifications
- Registered Professional Planner (RPP) and PIBC member in good standing along with a university graduate degree in planning or a related discipline and progressive municipal or urban experience at a professional level (minimum of 2 years’ experience); or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Demonstrated experience in processing development files and Land Titles forms.
- Knowledge of Acts and Regulations and other planning instruments.
- Experience working on complex and controversial projects.
- Skilled in creative problem-solving, communication, negotiation, and facilitation.
- Ability to prepare and present reports which clearly communicate complex ideas, conduct research to support policy development, and manage workload in a fast-paced environment.
