Tiny houses of all kinds are gaining in popularity as an alternative and creative affordable housing model.  While they are a great option for diverse communities, they often face problems with zoning, servicing, building code, and other legal considerations.  How can we incorporate tiny houses and innovative infill into our planning vernacular? Our panel of speakers will discuss a range of tiny housing options that are being developed in their communities.

Introduction by Anastasia Koutalianos & Samantha Gambling, Co-founders, BC Tiny House Collective
 - What is the Tiny House Movement? What is a Tiny House? What are the benefits of a smaller home? The co-founders of BC Tiny House Collective will answer these questions and provide an overview of tiny house pilots, established communities, and initiatives taking place throughout BC. 

David Block, MCIP, RPP, Director of Development Services, City of Terrace - Attracting attention and inquiries from all over North America, Bluegrass Meadow Micro Village, located near Terrace, is British Columbia’s first tiny home community.  David Block will discuss the challenges and opportunities associated with this unique development.  As well, he will explore the ‘R.V. Park’ as a model for permanent affordable homes, and showcase some higher density, small house developments that are being built in his community.

Bryn Davidson, B.Eng. M.Arch. LEED-AP, Lanefab Design/Build, Vancouver
 - Back in 2010, his firm Lanefab designed and built Vancouver’s first laneway house.  Since then, hundreds of detached auxiliary dwelling units (ADUs) have been built every year in Vancouver, and there are now more than 2,000 laneway houses sprinkled across the city. Why has this affordable and alternative housing model not caught on in other communities across B.C. & the Yukon?  Bryn will explore the planning, process and permitting issues that are limiting the development of ADUs in other municipalities.  Several examples of small, sensitive, infill development (small houses/laneway homes) will be shown.

James Moore, MCIP, RPP, Long Range Policy Manager, City of Kelowna - 
In an effort to help solve the housing crunch, the City of Kelowna has embarked on a new housing initiative centered around innovative infill housing.  Council has formally adopted the new RU7 - Infill Housing zone (subdividing a single-family lot to permit 4 new homes) in select areas of the urban core to allow for infill development. The new RU7 zone is meant to allow greater flexibility for infill housing that remains sensitive to surrounding neighbourhoods.  James will discuss how this new zone is changing the urban core through examples and case studies.
