PIBC’s Vancouver Island North Chapter is excited to bring to you the first session of the 2022 Virtual Lunch and Learn Webinar Series.  Join us for an online Zoom event on Wednesday, February 16, 2022 from 12:00 pm to 1:30 pm.

Student Showcase: New Ideas, New Directions

About the Speakers:

For our first Lunch and Learn session of the year, we are excited to collaborate with the Vancouver Island University’s Masters of Community Planning (MCP) Program to bring you a fascinating lineup of student presentations.  A mix of first year and second year students will be presenting on their research in a modified Pecha Kucha format consisting of 10 slides for each presentation, with each slide lasting 20 seconds.  Student research often focuses on unusual aspects of planning, and this session seeks to move away from the familiar and explore new ideas that many of us will not be exposed to in our typical lines of work.  We will welcome the following student speakers and their topics:

1. Town Meets Gown: Using a Satellite Campus as a Means of Urban Renewal in Downtown Nanaimo - By Caelen Middleton, first year MCP student.

2. Gendered Cities: A Feminist Theory Approach Relating to Urban Space - By Olivia Moores, first year MCP student.

3. Not Too Big, Not Too Small But Just Right: Does Parcel Size Predict and/or Determine Agricultural Utilization of Land in BC? - By Matthew Smith, first year MCP student.

4. Planning for Seaweed Aquaculture - By Sarah Foulkes, second year MCP student.

5. Squeaking into the Conversation: Animal-Aided Design Guidelines for Surrey, BC - By Skye Bell, second year MCP student.

6. Tiny Houses, Big Ideas: Best Practices of an Emerging Housing Typology in British Columbia - By Annie Girdler, second year MCP student.

We invite you to join us as the speakers explore current and proposed thesis research topics and provide an opportunity for questions, input and discussion from planners in attendance.

About this event

Please join us by computer or phone on Wednesday, February 16 from 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm for approximately 30 minutes worth of Zoom presentations with time for Q & A and discussion at the end. Please note that the event will be preceded by the annual member update, which will take approximately 15 minutes.

In order to attend the virtual event, please CLICK HERE to RSVP and register. A link to the Zoom meeting will be sent to those registered.

Following the student presentations, the Zoom link will remain active until 1:30 pm for anyone who is interested in staying on the call for an informal “check-in” with other local planners in attendance. This is meant to be a way to connect with colleagues, discuss the presentations and meet new planners in the area through the form of a virtual post-presentation mingling session.
