A walking tour that explores the visual language of Vancouver’s many creative cultures. Join us for an expert-led street art walk around Mt Pleasant by Vancouver Detours, the official tour partner of the Vancouver Mural Festival. Along with curatorial information about the artwork, we will give you the insider 's scoop on what it takes to put public art on private property with permission from the city. There will be a spotlight on local Indigenous artists, and your guide will use the murals as an entry point to discuss topics ranging from ecological urgency, gentrification and neighbourhood change, cultural visibility, and why some forms of street art are considered more ‘legitimate’ than others.

Guide Bio Alasdair Butcher is the founder of Vancouver Detours and has been leading walks and talks on the lesser known aspects of Vancouver since 2008. He holds a Masters in Urban Studies and works at BC Housing and the SFU Wosk Centre for Dialogue. Alasdair also currently sits on the Vancouver City Planning Commission and Urban Design Panel and is a Director at the Heritage Vancouver Society. He once went for a very long run in North Korea.

The tour begins at the Vancouver Mural Festival (former City Centre Motor Hotel), 2111 Main Street, Vancouver, and will conveniently end near a location that is perfect for optional snacks afterwards.
