Located adjacent to downtown Victoria, Esquimalt is a residential community (population 17,000) with extensive amenities including beautiful parks and beaches, scenic waterfront walkways as well as modern recreational facilities, schools and commercial services.


The Development Services Department is seeking a motivated individual to fill a temporary (1 year term), full-time Planner 1 position. Reporting to the Director of Development Services, the incumbent is responsible for processing applications for: Official Community Plan amendments, rezonings, development permits, and development variance permits including developing recommendations for commissions, committees, and Council. The ideal candidate will have an undergraduate degree in planning plus some related experience, preferably in a local government setting. Other qualifications include:

  • Excellent written and oral communications skills;
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills with the ability to deal in a courteous and tactful manner with the public, contractors and developers; and
  • Eligibility for membership in the Canadian Institute of Planners.

Salary: $32.51 – $35.09 hourly (2016 rates) plus 14 % in lieu of benefits


Temporary Position: expected to work 35 hours per week, up to 12 months
