Role Overview
McElhanney’s Interior Region offices are seeking a Planner to join their team. Supporting vibrant, livable communities is a key focus of McElhanney across Western Canada, and our Planning teams are active in laying the groundwork for complex, inter-disciplinary projects that shape the way we live. For this reason, we are looking for a Planner to help grow our Planning practice in the Okanagan region of British Columbia and as support for the company throughout BC. The position will be based in our Penticton Branch Office but the candidate will have the option to work remotely.   

The successful individual will be a part of a team focusing on a diverse range of land development, municipal policy and subdivision / urban design projects. The candidate will need to have a willingness to learn about local concerns and sensitivities and understand the various development approval processes in the Okanagan communities. 

Responsibilities

  • Supporting and helping build the planning practice in the Okanagan area and coordinating with planning teams in other branches to ensure great project delivery;
  • Business development with new, existing, and key clients;
  • Liaising and developing strategic partnerships with clients, project stakeholders, various levels of government and sub-consultants;
  • Provide overall management of assigned planning projects;
  • Supervise and provide direction to technical and professional staff, as required.


Requirements

  • 5 - 10 years community planning experience, preferably with a background in consulting;
  • Master’s Degree in urban planning, urban design, or related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Experience in land development approval and municipal planning processes;
  • Proven excellence in creative problem solving and solution implementation;
  • An understanding of provincial planning legislation, and a willingness to learn surrounding local government policies and bylaw requirements.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Technical and policy writing expertise;
  • Ability to prepare information and host Public Engagement opportunities;
  • Effective time management skills with the ability to function in a high volume, challenging environment;
  • CAD experience or ability to use other design software would be an asset.
  • Eligibility for membership with the Canadian Institute of Planners;
  • A valid driver’s license is required.
