Queen Victoria herself gave the city of New Westminster its name. When British Columbia was just a dream in the hearts of pioneers and gold miners, this was its capital city — the cosmopolitan centre of the young province.

Today, the City of New Westminster is in the midst of a very real transformation. At the very epicenter of the Lower Mainland, the City is positioned perfectly as a place to live and do business. It is renowned throughout the region for the quality, creativity and innovation of its services to residents and businesses, its intelligent community status, its award winning open spaces, its recent waterfront transformation, and its emerging cultural and heritage attractions. The City of New Westminster also possesses a strong, economic development-friendly environment and was named among the top three cities in which to start a small business in Metro Vancouver.  For all these reasons and more, New Westminster has never felt more relevant and exciting and City staff will continue to play a key role in solidifying its place as a top municipality in Metro Vancouver.

As a result of retirement, the City is now seeking a new Director of Development Services to build on these recent successes and provide leadership and direction to a department that has been instrumental in establishing New Westminster’s reputation as an innovative and progressive municipality – one that has become a regional leader. A member of the senior management team and reporting directly into the Chief Administrative Officer, the Director will lead and manage a broad set of planning and development functions including long-range and short-term planning, building, lands, permitting and bylaws.

With a solutions-orientation, superb relationship skills and extensive knowledge of the principles and methods of community and land use planning, the successful candidate brings strong administrative and leadership skills to the city, as well as direct and successful accountability for the development and administration of operational and capital budgets. The ideal candidate is also a superb communicator with a penchant for ensuring best practice service delivery.

This is a unique opportunity to play a significant role in shaping a thriving municipality that values service, entrepreneurialism, and smart growth.
