Signs of the Times: An Introduction to Signs

The sign industry is ubiquitous yet unknown: while signs surround us everywhere, little is known about the industry. In British Columbia, traditional sign manufacturing represents $218 million in revenue and employs 1,587 people. The purpose of this 2 hour workshop is to introduce types of signage, discuss the impact signs have on economic development and look at best practices in writing sign codes.

The Sign Association of Canada is a national association of sign manufacturers and suppliers. Coming up with reasonable and enforceable sign codes can often be a complex process. With so many community stakeholders impacted by sign codes, it is important that the decision makers have the most accurate, up-to-date information and expertise possible. This seminar will present three modules to educate experienced land use planners on the technology within signs, sign code issues, understanding electronic message centers, and the role of effective signage to businesses and communities.
