A key objective of the Building Act is to bring greater consistency to the technical building requirements in force across B.C. Technical building requirements define the methods, materials, products, assemblies or dimensions used for the construction, alteration, repair and demolition of buildings.

To achieve greater consistency, local governments’ authority to set technical building requirements is changing. Under Section 5 of the Act, if a matter is regulated in a provincial building regulation, any requirements for that matter established in local government bylaws will be of no legal force after a two-year transition period ending December 15, 2017.

What does this mean for local governments? Will they be able to enact any technical building requirements? If so, for what? If not, what are their options? This is an opportunity to learn more about the changes introduced by Section 5 and ask questions of representatives from the provincial government branch responsible for implementing the Building Act.

A Note About Future Webinars: We will be holding a related webinar on October 26 about how local governments can apply for a variation to the building requirements under the Act. A third webinar will be held in late November (date to be confirmed) about concerns from planners regarding the changes to the Act and what it might really mean for the profession. Register today and stay tuned!
