Designing a Public Engagement Program – Tools and Techniques

This workshop will provide an overview of public engagement, discuss different engagement techniques and help planners pick the right tool for the planning challenge to be addressed.  The workshop will also teach planners basic facilitation skills, how to keep discussions flowing and how to respond to difficult group dynamics that threaten to derail the consultation process.

Part 1: Designing a Public Engagement Program – Tools of the Trade
Learning Objectives: Understand the public participation continuum. Build your toolkit of different methods to engage the public and learn how to design a public engagement program to fit your community, issue and available resources.

-Definitions and goals of public engagement
-Public participation continuum
-Practice – affinity diagram and mindmapping
-What influences the choice of engagement techniques
-Overview of different public engagement tools, their uses and limitations
-Practice – World Café
-Steps to design a public engagement program

Part 2: Facilitation Techniques

Learning Objectives: Understand the role and responsibilities of a facilitator. Learn techniques to help facilitate small group discussions. Learn how to deal with different types of people and group dynamics and what to do when things threaten to go sideways.

-Role and responsibilities of the planner-facilitator
-Dynamics of group decision making
-Facilitation techniques to keep discussions flowing and on track
