Event Description

Planning for transportation (how we move) and mobility (our ability to move) requires thinking broadly and strategically about the myriad multimodal ways we move through the city. Transportation decisions and investments have a powerful impact on the form and function of the city, its economy, and the quality of life of its residents. This course will help you understand how decisions are made by the public, planners, engineers, and elected officials that shape the experience and efficiency of getting you where you need to go. You will learn the basics of transportation planning, and discover how you can influence transportation decision-making to shape better, healthier, more affordable, and more sustainable communities.

We will discuss and debate the big ideas and key methods that influence transportation planning, including: what influences how we move, how transportation shapes the city (and vice-versa), how to increase travel choices, why we are always stuck in traffic, and how new ideas and technologies are shaping our transportation future. Topics include governance and decision-making, demand management, multimodal network and street design, and implementation.
