Oral Exam Resources

All Candidate members in good standing working towards Certified membership, or 'Registered Professional Planner' status, with the Planning Institute of British Columbia and the Canadian Institute of Planners are required to successfully complete an Oral Exam interview as the final step towards Certified membership.

The Oral Exam interview is the final step and requirement for Certified membership in the Institute. Candidates for Certified membership are only eligible to sit for the Oral Exam interview after having successfully completed all other previous steps or requirements for Certified membership.

The Oral Exam Interview:

The Oral Exam interview is a semi-informal face-to-face conversational style interview conducted by a panel of designated volunteer Certified Member Examiners in accordance with the following:

  • Except in exceptional circumstances, the Oral Exam interview will be held in person.
  • The interview will be conducted by a designated panel of two or three Certified member Examiners, as designated by the Membership Committee.
  • Interviews will be scheduled a limited number of times per year by the Institute, in various regional centers across BC and the Yukon.
  • Eligible candidates will be contacted by the Institute to schedule their respective interviews for the Oral Exam on a first-come first-serve basis.
  • Eligible candidates will be required to make payment of the requisite Oral Exam fee – currently: $50.
  • Candidates scheduled for an Oral Exam interview will be provided the date, time and location of their interview.
  • Candidates will be asked to provide a copy of their current resume or CV for the interview panel.
  • Once scheduled for their Oral Exam interview, candidates will  be provided with brief preparatory materials to assist in preparing for the interview.
  • The Oral Exam interview will normally cover topics including: professionalism, ethics, the Institute’s Code of Ethics & Professional Conduct, the public interest, candidate's professional experience, and applicants’ interest in becoming a Member of the Institute.
  • Candidates will be asked to draw on their own professional experience to illustrate their answers during the Oral Exam interview.
  • The Oral Exam interview will normally be between 25 and 35 minutes in length.
  • The Oral Exam interview is essentially evaluated on a pass/fail basis. Candidates will be notified by the Institute of the results of their Oral Exam interview, normally within two to three weeks of the completion of the interview.
  • Candidates who successfully complete the Oral Exam interview will be referred to PIBC Council for admission to Certified Membership.
  • Candidates who do not successfully pass the Oral Exam interview will be given feedback from the interview panel on their areas of weakness, and given guidance to prepare to retake the Oral Exam interview.

Please Note: Candidates who do not have a minimum of two years of Canadian professional planning experience will be asked additional special questions, as part of their Oral Exam interview, related to the planning system in Canada.

Candidates with questions regarding the Oral Exam interview should contact PIBC.
