Certified Membership Process – Related Degree

Below is an overview of the process for a Candidate member in good standing who holds a university degree which is related to planning (as designated by the Institute), and who was admitted to Candidate membership in the Institute prior to June 11th, 2012, to become a Certified member, or 'Registered Professional Planner' with PIBC and CIP.

While Candidate members should be logging their responsible planning work experience as they go, this formal process should be started once a Candidate member has been working in planning and achieved a minimum of four year’s of responsible planning work experience.

Application & Log Book

The first step is to complete the Application Form for Certified membership and Log Book documenting a minimum of four years (48 months) of responsible planning work experience. Follow the links below for related membership resources:

Once a completed application form and log book have been submitted, the Membership Committee will review them in accordance with the Institute’s applicable membership criteria. Once the Committee has determined that a candidate has met the criteria, they will be referred to the next step in the process.

Written Exam

The next step in the process for a candidate with a related degree is the successful completion of the Written Exam requirement. Applicants have two options available to complete the Written Exam requirement – a Self-Directed Take Home Exam option, or the Membership Exam Course option. Once an candidate successfully completes the Written Exam requirement they will be referred to the next step in the process.

Oral Exam Interview

The final step in the process for all candidates for Certified membership is the successful completion of the Oral Exam interview. For more information on the Oral Exam interview, follow the link here:

Once a candidate successfully completes the Oral Exam interview, their admission to Certified membership will be referred to PIBC Council for approval.
