Certified Member Resources – Unrelated Degree

Below is an overview of the process for a Candidate Member (formerly Provisional Member) in good standing who holds a degree which is unrelated to planning (as designated by the Institute) to become a Certified Member (formerly Full Member), or 'Registered Professional Planner' with PIBC and CIP.

While Candidate members should be logging their responsible planning work experience as they go, this formal process should be started once a Candidate member has been working in planning and achieved a minimum of six year’s of responsible planning work experience.

Application & Log Book

The first step is to complete the Application Form for Certified Membership and Log Book documenting a minimum of six years (72 months) of responsible planning work experience. Follow the links below for related membership resources:

Once a completed application form and log book have been submitted, the Membership Committee will review them in accordance with the Institute’s membership criteria. Once the Committee has determined that an applicant has met the criteria, they will be referred to the next step in the process.

Written Exam

The next step in the process for an applicant with a related degree is the successful completion of the Written Exam requirement. Applicants have two options available to complete the Written Exam requirement – a Take Home Exam option, or the Membership Course option. For more information on the Written Exam, follow the link here:

Once an applicant successfully completes the Written Exam requirement they will be referred to the next step in the process.

Oral Exam Interview

The final step in the process for all applicants for Certified Membership is the successful completion of the Oral Exam interview. For more information on the Oral Exam interview, follow the link here:

Once an applicant successfully completes the Oral Exam interview, their admission to Certified Membership will be referred to PIBC Council for approval.
