Green Shores for Homes Project Call for Expressions of Interest
Green Shores for Homes Project Call for Expression of Interest for Technical Team Members
In 2010 the City of Seattle, in partnership with San Juan County, was awarded a four-year grant under EPA’s Puget Sound Watershed Management Assistance Program to develop and test incentives to protect and improve ecosystem function and processes along shorelines of single-family waterfront homes (freshwater and marine). Islands Trust, a federation of local governments within the BC Gulf Islands, has also joined the Green Shores for Homes (GSH) initiative as a Canadian partner, making this project a novel transboundary initiative which will provide models for other jurisdictions within the Salish Sea to protect shoreline ecological function from impacts of growth. Overall Green Shores for Homes program coordination is being provided by staff from Washington Sea Grant.
The assessment framework, Green Shores for Homes (GSH), will be based on the existing Green Shores Coastal Development Rating System (CDRS) developed by the Stewardship Centre of British Columbia (www.greenshores.ca) as well as Seattle's existing Green Shorelines guidelines (http://www.seattle.gov/dpd/Planning/Green_Shorelines/Overview/).
The Green Shores for Homes Technical Team (GSTT) is being established to build a credible, technically sound program through representation by a range of professional experts. GSTT members will work with the Green Shores for Homes Steering Committee to develop a pilot Green Shores for Homes assessment method. In addition members of the GSTT will also contribute to:
-
-
- a review of existing ratings and incentive program assessment methods to help in the development of a delivery model for Green Shores for Homes.
- the development of a design example catalogue to illustrate specific GSH approaches to shore design.
- workshops with shoreline property owners, building and development professionals.
- pilot testing the Green Shores for Homes assessment method.
- program evaluation.
-
The GSTT will be comprised of coastal professionals, preferably from British Columbia or the State of Washington, from the following disciplines:
-
- Coastal Engineering
- Coastal Geosciences
- Nearshore Habitat Biology - Preference for professional expertise in freshwater habitat and riparian ecology.
- Landscape Design/Architecture (shoreline focused)
- Assessment/Incentive Program Expertise - Required for the review and assessment of existing programs and resources in order to create a model for delivering the Green Shores for Homes assessment program. This person should have a good working knowledge of the delivery of incentive-based programs.
60 to 200 hours will be required of each GSTT member over the four-year grant period, with the actual level of effort for each member varying depending on task assignments. In addition the Green Shores for Homes Steering Committee may call for additional GSTT expertise for special assignments and/or peer review of the credit system. Under the terms of the EPA grant remuneration for services is restricted to no more than $120 USD per hour for the duration of the project plus applicable expenses.
If you are interested in participating on the Green Shores Technical Team, please reply to gshores@uw.edu by 5pm PDT on Friday, September 2nd with a resume, short letter (less than 2 pages) outlining your interest in the GSH program and relevant experience at the scale of single family home parcels, and hourly charge out rate.
