PIBC undertakes a variety of projects and initiatives related to its mission, including: policy matters, membership & professional issues, service & event initiatives, external outreach & communications projects, and more.

- Planning for the Future Project: This major ongoing initiative, coordinated nationally through the Canadian Institute of Planners, involves extensive work developing revised membership standards and processes for the planning profession in Canada.
- Professional Legislation & Certification Task Force: This ongoing initiative, coordinated by a Task Force established by PIBC Council, is investigating the possible pursuit of professional legislation for planners in British Columbia and the Yukon, in accordance with the current PIBC Council Strategic Plan.
- 2009 Membership Survey: This ongoing project involved an electronic survey of all practicing professional members of PIBC, undertaken in 2009, exploring demographic, economic, and employment factors as well as seeking feedback on Institute activities. The results of the 2009 survey are now available.
