Continuing Professional Development (CPD) – Background Information

The PIBC Continuing Professional Development (CPD) System was introduced by a Membership-wide vote and bylaw change in May 2003, following several years of consultation and research by the PIBC Education Committee. The system was implemented over many months, with the first reporting deadline occurring December 31, 2004.

The CPD System is designed to be user-friendly and flexible for Members, while accomplishing the collective goal of the Institute and its membership — to maintain the highest professional standards and latest knowledge, understanding, skills and abilities relevant to the theory, methods, and practice of planning.

Since its inception, the PIBC CPD System has been a forward-looking and leading model within the planning profession across Canada and beyond. Under the guidance of PIBC Council and the Education Committee, and with ongoing feedback from members, the CPD system has further developed and evolved to meet the needs of members, the profession, and the public interest.

PIBC also collaborates and shares information with the Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP) and other affiliate planning associations across Canada through participation in the National Continuous Professional Learning (CPL) Committee.
