Keynote Speakers

This year’s conference includes a stimulating line-up of innovative keynote speakers who will inform, illuminate and challenge with their unique and ‘out of the box’ perspectives. Don’t’ miss these great speakers:

Tod Maffin: Called "one of Canada's most influential futurists" by The Globe and Mail, Tod Maffin is a worldwide authority on new technologies, and the strategic use of social media, blogs, podcasts, online video and user-generated content. He's a go-to speaker on the impact of massive technological change on business and the economy, and can accessibly discuss every aspect of technology's implications on our lives. His comprehensive understanding of high-velocity change and competition, hyper-innovation, and the latest trends offers you a startling glimpse into the future that's just around the corner -- whether six months, one year, or a decade away.

Maffin is a national CBC broadcaster, a podcasting pioneer, and a popular blogger whose posts are followed by thousands of people in the media, tech and business worlds. In 1999, Maffin launched MindfulEye.com, an artificial intelligence firm that led to his meteoric rise in popularity as a technology futurist. A phenomenal speaker who has won standing ovations around the world, Maffin possesses an energetic, jargon-free style that ensures audiences are not only engaged, but also entertained and motivated.

Colin Ellard: Colin Ellard helps us understand how deeply the problems of physical space permeate our lives, and how we can overcome them. In his book Where Am I?, he explores our horrible grasp of space, and how this influences everything from our behavior, our preferences, and our attitudes toward buildings, cities, and natural settings. Where Am I? (called You Are Here in the U.S.) showcases what the New York Times calls Ellard's "knack for distilling obscure scientific theories into practical wisdom." The Los Angeles Times calls him, "One of the finest science writers I've ever read," and writes, "You know you are in the hands of a good teacher when you look up from a book and your own ideas spill out like winnings from a slot machine."
Ellard is a Professor of Behavioral Neuroscience at the Univeristy of Waterloo. He's also Director of the Research Lab for Immersive Virtual Environments (RELIVE), also at UofW. He has been conducting multidisciplinary research and writing about the psychology of spatial perception for the last 25 years. His research projects include investigations of the psychology of residential design, wayfinding at the urban scale, restorative effects of exposure to natural settings, and comparative studies of defensive responses.
